The Boring Company
The Boring Company (TBC) is an American infrastructure and tunnel construction company founded by Elon Musk in 2016. Originally a subsidiary of SpaceX, it became an independent entity in 2018.
Mission and Goals
- Solving Traffic: The company’s primary objective is to alleviate urban traffic congestion by building low-cost, high-speed underground tunnel systems known as "Loops".
- Infrastructure: Beyond transportation, TBC aims to create infrastructure for utilities and freight.
- Technological Vision: The long-term vision involves using fully autonomous electric vehicles to transport passengers point-to-point through narrow, single-lane tunnels.
Key Projects and Operations
- Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) Loop: Currently the company's most prominent operational project, this system uses a network of tunnels and modified Tesla vehicles to shuttle passengers underground.
- Other Initiatives: The company has explored or pursued projects in various cities, including Los Angeles, Nashville, and Dubai.
- Equipment: TBC also designs and manufactures its own tunnel-boring machines to increase the speed and reduce the cost of excavation.
Company History
- Origins: The company was conceived after Elon Musk expressed frustration with Los Angeles traffic in December 2016.
- Funding: In its early stages, the company famously raised funds through unconventional merchandise sales, such as hats, fire extinguishers, and a device marketed as "Not a Flamethrower". It has since secured significant venture capital, including a $675 million Series C round in 2022.
